What happens when one of Berlin’s wildest queer club collectives strips away the booze but keeps the magic? Lunchbox Candy’s Sugar Free is a sober twist on their iconic nightlife experience. We caught up with the Founder, Adam Munnings.

Tell us, how did you come up with the idea of a sober Lunchbox Candy?

As wild as a regular Lunchbox Candy can be we’ve always looked upon it as a transformative, healing and precious endeavour. Sobriety and sober curiosity became a hot topic amongst our collective members and community as working in nightlife can of course be riddled with temptation. So when we had the chance to pitch a concept to the Club Commission last year it felt only natural to shape a sober initiative.

Why is it an important alternative?

We love to nurture our inner child, that’s what makes Lunchbox so playful and when you think about children they dance, scream, shout and have wild imaginations with no help of substances, well maybe some sugar. As adults we tend to lose that free spirited approach to life. There’s so much to love about nightlife, music, community, expression, connection, sex positivity and creativity. Accessibility is so important also and those who are on a sober journey deserve an environment where we can all eat the burgers without the need for fries. It’s a healing reminder that we have everything we need within.

What reactions and feedback did you get from the first event?

Wow we were honestly blown away. Not just by the event itself but by the ripples it had in the wider community by sparking conversation and we soon realised that there is such a demand for initiatives like Sugar Free, especially in Berlin. The smiles on peoples faces were so genuine it was glorious. Sobriety doesn't have to be bland or boring. It’s a super power. We were and still so proud of our community for embracing the concept and we’re so happy to be able to do it regularly.

How do they differ from your regular Lunchbox Candy events?

The concept really remains the same. Great music that you wanna move your body too, host activations and performances, a facilitated love room for sexy times and a community that really just get it and show up for each other. People still turn looks and it’s weird, wild and wonderful. Sure it’s a little more condensed, cute and cosy but it feels really refreshing after the regular events have become so big and oh so stimulating.

What can one expect of the evening?

We have 2 floors, the gorgeous Aeden garden and the Love Room all with sweets and treats for you to enjoy. 6pm we have a movement workshop ‘A Dose Of Pleasure’ hosted bt Bibingka aka Alvin Collantes to activate those bodies and leave your ego behind. Impromptu performances, shibari in the Love Room and cute cute cuteness. Smoothies, mocktails and ginger shots at the bar of course.

What is your best tip to keep the energy up without any additives?

Fruit, nuts, bananas and the classic Club Mate. Also if the music is good and the vibes are fire it all comes naturally. Just look around and remain fascinated with what’s going on. Berlin is a magical place full of unique individuals. Feed off the love! Also wildcard tip - take a friend, join hands and spin around in the garden, you’ll laugh and be injected with energy.

What is the upcoming plan with Sugar Free, is this an event series that will continue?

Yes! Every 6 months (April & October). We’re excited to keep tweaking and elevating the experience. Like all things we do with Lunchbox it’s filled with love and intention. See you Sunday!
